PAUL MERSON COLUMN: Rafa’s revolution, City need Guardiola now, is Conte the right move?

It proves he loves football and wants to be in the game. They’re still a big club Newcastle, with 52,000 fans every week.

Whoever takes that job hangs on to the dream that they are going to be the one.

But let’s be real. If they get relegated he won’t be there next season. Keep them up though, and I can see big things happening there.

Where else would he go, anyway? I don’t think the top eight or nine Premier League clubs would have him and after that Newcastle are not far off the next biggest.

I just think that with the TV money next year he could have them challenging. He’s a big name and he will attract good players.

I think it took so long to appoint him because he was holding out for as many guarantees as he could get – and I reckon he got them.

Say what you like about Mike Ashley. He’s a shrewd businessman. He must have sat down and realised that what he’s got there is not working.
