PAUL MERSON COLUMN: Chelsea must sell Eden Hazard and Arsene Wenger has to improve

12 Mar

Going out of the Champions League is a huge blow to Chelsea, and they could be out of everything by tonight.

They will need all their best players fit at Everton. But then again you never know which Everton you are going to get.

Will it be the one that wiped the floor with Stoke, or the one that was 2-0 up against West Ham and lost 3-2?

Everton’s season is on the line as well. They would love a day out at Wembley and the chance to win a trophy.

They were unlucky to miss a penalty to go 3-0 up against West Ham, but you’ve got to have more about you as a manager than to play that open with 10 men.

It’s nowhere near good enough from Roberto Martinez. Sometimes you have to stick 10 behind the ball and protect what you’ve got.

I see all the same flaws his Wigan had in this Everton team. This is a big match for Martinez. The new owner there will want success, and new owners usually want their own men in.

If he loses he’ll be under pressure. Three seasons that will be without winning anything. And this is a very good team.

No disrespect to Leicester but Everton have better players. How many Leicester players would get in the Everton team? Not many.

If you had £1m to bet on who would win the league next season you’d put it on Everton, not Leicester. They’re punching well below their weight.

Everton play great football but you don’t want to be every neutral’s favourite team. You know they’ll score goals. But you know they’ll concede as well.

Martinez has to get the balance right against Chelsea or he could find his season is over and his job on the line…
