Outrage at bid to ‘rig’ EU vote: Row as Cameron backs extending voters’ deadline

A record total of 525,000 people successfully completed applications during the whole of Tuesday, he told MPs.

Robust testing of the online registration system had taken place but it still could not cope with “unprecedented” demand which at its peak on Tuesday at 10.15 pm measured 214,000 applications an hour, nearly three times the previous peak of 74,000 before last year’s general election.

“It is because of this exceptional demand that the website crashed,” insisted Mr Hancock.

Leading Leave campaigner Bernard Jenkin, the Conservative chairman of the Commons’ Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee, warned the Government was dicing with legality by proposing to move the deadline and must avoid any lengthy extension.
