Sunderland skipper John O’Shea says the quality of the signings the club made in January should be used as a future benchmark.
Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce landed Lamine Kone, Jan Kirchhoff and Wahbi Khazri during the January transfer window and the trio were instrumental in the side escaping the drop when at one point it had looked a certainty.
O’Shea, who has seen a succession of players come through the doors who have not been good enough, says the trio need to be the benchmark for the future.
“We added to the quality of the squad in January and hopefully the manager will get the chance to do that again,” he told the Gazette.
“That will increase the competition and I’ve said throughout my whole career, that the quality only gets better with more competition.
“The January boys came in and settled in so quickly and had such an impact.
“IÂ’ll be hoping – and IÂ’m sure the manager will be – that he can make an impact early on and get things done quickly.”
