Juan Mata’s second-half strike was enough for Manchester United to beat Norwich City 1-0 at Carrow Road.
The only goal of the game came on 72 minutes when a lapse in defence from Sebastien Bassong allowed Wayne Rooney to get in behind the Canaries’ back line.
The England captain was slow to shoot, allowing Bassong to track back, but Rooney then did well to square the ball to Mata who made no mistake in firing home.
It was a rather tepid showing from the hosts who didn’t work David De Gea enough after what was a strong start for the Canaries, with the best effort coming after five minutes when Cameron Jerome, unmarked in the box, headed over from 10 yards.
Chris Smalling, who had a great game in defence for the visitors, almost scored after the half-hour mark when he met a cross, but his header was just over the bar.
It was United who had the better chances, including Morgan Schneiderlin who put his shot wide when he was through one-on-one with only a few minutes remaining.
Norwich remain in serious relegation trouble while United have put the pressure on as they look to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.
