To his amazement, McNally immediately tweeted back : “It’s OK I understand your view. I have resigned tonight and I hope that the club can now progress.”

McNally later did a dramatic u-turn but, with his credibility in tatters, the Norwich board said yesterday they had unanimously accepted his resignation.

Summers said: “It was just sheer frustration that made me send the message, so I was really surprised when his account responded and that just started everything off.

“At first I didn’t think it was serious and I thought maybe it was somebody joking around but it was just unprofessional.”
