Lucas Leiva will miss Liverpool’s trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday after being ruled out for “five or six weeks” with a thigh injury.
The Brazilian midfielder suffered the injury during last Sunday’s Capital One Cup final penalty shoot-out against Manchester City at Wembley.
The injury was not deemed to be too serious but Lucas subsequently missed Wednesday 3-0 Premier League win against City at Anfield.
However, boss Jurgen Klopp has now confirmed that the 29-year-old is not fit for the game at Selhurst Park this weekend and is looking at a fairly lengthy spell on the sidelines.
He told his pre-match press conference: “Lucas is really unfortunate, a little bit more serious [than thought].
“I’ve never heard about an injury you can get like this!
“I don’t know exactly, but five or six weeks [out]. Not too good.”
Mamadou Sakho, who suffered a head injury at Wembley, and Daniel Sturridge could be in line to return against Palace after sitting out the win against City in midweek.
Meanwhile, Kevin Stewart, Jordan Rossiter, Joe Gomez and Danny Ings are all still out with long-term problems.
The win against City moved Liverpool to within six points of the top-four Champions League places, but Klopp is playing down making a challenge.
He added: “We are in a good way but now it’s Crystal Palace and I didn’t forget the first game [Palace won at Anfield]. We have to take points back.
“I don’t think about the top four. We have a lot of points to get and we should start getting as many as we can.”
