Dean Saunders joined Jim White on talkSPORT on Wednesday and told a great story about Alan Shearer that summed up the personality which made the striker a Newcastle legend.

Saunders was a coach at Newcastle United during Graeme Souness’ tenure as Magpies manager, which coincided with the final years of Shearer’s illustrious career.

A former Premier League striker himself, Saunders waxed lyrical about the decision Shearer made to turn down a final big pay day from Newcastle, because he didn’t feel he could contribute enough to the club’s cause.

In Saunders’ words, Shearer “didn’t play for money”.
