Lee Bowyer has told talkSPORT Newcastle should stick with manager Steve McClaren.
The Magpies are sitting 19th in the Premier League after three consecutive defeats – the latest at the hands of relegation rivals Bournemouth on Saturday.
Fans are getting increasingly restless and board members Lee Charnley, Bob Moncur and Graham Carr met on Monday to discuss McClaren’s future.
But Bowyer believes the club should resist calls to dispense with McClaren’s services.
The former St James’ Park star claims there has been a noticeable improvement in the team since December and he is convinced they have the quality to survive under the ex-England boss.
Asked on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast whether the club should make a managerial change, he said: “No. I think they should hang in there with Steve.
“After Christmas they made a couple of additions and I think they are good additions. They turned the corner at one stage. Ok, it wasn’t a good result at the weekend and they are still in the bottom three, but I do think they turned a corner.
“The games I have seen on the telly they are at least working hard and before Christmas I don’t think they were. [Jonjo] Shelvey is a good buy – they have got someone in there now that will put their foot in and get the crowd behind them.”
