With Rob Elliot joining Tim Krul on the long-term casualty list, Darlow is now Newcastle’s first choice keeper.
He added: “I’ve got seven games to show what I can do and put in some good performances.
“At least I can now prepare in the knowledge that I’m playing. It’s nice to be in that position despite the terrible circumstances with Rob.”
Elliot, who damaged cruciate knee ligaments while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland a week ago, undergoes surgery this week and is expected to be sidelined for six months.
