That levelled out Gayle’s 24th-minute opener and things went from bad to worse for the promotion favourites early in the second half when Cameron Jerome stepped inside Jonjo Shelvey to curl in his fourth goal of the season.
Newcastle looked down and out when Jacob Murphy stretched the lead with a 22-yard shot which took a wicked deflection off Jamaal Lascelles.
But within two minutes, the lead had been halved when Dwight Gayle scored his second of the game, latching onto Jonjo Shelvey’s long ball to shoot home.
Gayle could have had a hat-trick inside 20 minutes as Newcastle laid siege to the Norwich goal.
On 12 minutes, Shelvey sprayed the ball out wide to DeAndre Yedlin who cushioned the ball towards Gayle in front of goal but Michael McGovern kept out his volley with an instinctive save.
Four minutes later, a brilliant first touch took Gayle beyond Russell Martin before he prodded the ball inches wide.
