Tottenham have announced that boss Mauricio Pochettino has agreed a two-year extension to his current deal at the club.
It is a massive relief to Spurs fans amid reports of clubs of the stature of Real Madrid said to be keen on him after the success he has had at White Hart Lane.
Having been linked with a move back to Paris Saint Germain in midweek, when he said he would one day like to return to Paris, the Argentine has moved quickly to put an end to those rumours and confirmed he has agreed a further two years with Spurs that will keep him at the club until 2021.
“I think [my comments] were misunderstood,” he said. “I was captain of Paris Saint-Germain, I played there for three seasons and my former manager, who is now on the radio, called me and asked me some questions. He said ‘oh, one day would you like to manage Paris St Germain?Â’ [I said] ‘oh, why not?Â’
“This was all the wrong things that I said with him. But I can say now, to stop that, that we have reached a verbal agreement with the club to extend my contract here for two more years until 2021. We havenÂ’t signed yet but weÂ’ve reached a verbal agreement to stay here for the next five years.
“When will I sign the contract? Maybe Tuesday, or tomorrow – it depends on my lawyer now. I think itÂ’s a good moment to communicate that my future is here.
“We started to speak a few months ago and I think today is a good moment to communicate that we have reached the verbal agreement.
“I am very happy. I think Tottenham have unbelievable potential. After two years here weÂ’ve created a great group of players, we have a very strong squad with potential to be a top [club].”
Spurs of course still have hope that they can win the Premier League title – for which they are priced at 10/1 with Titanbet – but fans will be hoping that Pochettino’s decision to stay can keep them challenging for glory in the years to come.
