Sunderland are reported to be interested in signing Barnsley’s Alfie Mawson and Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid this summer.
Black Cats manager David Moyes admitted after Sunday’s defeat to Middlesbrough that he hoped to bring in several fresh faces before the transfer window closes next Friday.
Defence is a particular concern for the Scot after Younes Kaboul left for Watford last week, while he has several players out injured.
As a result, Moyes is looking to bring in some defensive reinforcements and is said to be ready to pay £3million for Barnsley centre-half Mawson, who has impressed in his 12 months with the Tykes.
Along with Mawson, Sunderland are also keen on Atletico Madrid full-back Manquillo, who continues to struggle to force his way into the Spanish side’s starting XI.
Manquillo, who had a disappointing spell at Liverpool in 2014, is also wanted by Watford and both clubs are preparing loan offers for the Spaniard.
