Sunderland boss David Moyes has been linked with a move for Liverpool outcast Christian Benteke as he looks to bolster his attack.
Moyes has not had long to put his stamp on the Black Cats squad following his appointment as Sam Allardyce’s successor last month.
The Scot could be set to go head-to-head with former club Everton as they both reportedly look to acquire the services of £30million-rated Belgian.
The former Manchester United boss feels that there is currently too much reliance on Jermain Defoe at the Stadium of Light and is keen to bring in a target-man like Benteke.
Moyes said: “There’s no doubt we have to make signings and I believe we definitely will do. We were never off the phone last week. It was constant apart from the training to see what we could do. It was more to get the information before we made any actions.
“I think it’s well documented that we’ve only got one centre-forward really in Jermain Defoe – we’ve got others who can do the job at other times. But I would like to strengthen in most areas if it comes up.”
Benteke’s chances at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp have been limited but the Reds are in no hurry to sell and will hold out for their full £30million valuation.
