Manchester United are set to hand Chelsea a major dilemma over Nemanja Matic with Jose Mourinho keen to sign the unsettled midfielder.
Matic is reported to be Mourinho’s top target for the defensive midfield role as the Portuguese boss is already understood to have effectively transfer-listed a number of current candidates for the role from within the Red Devils’ squad.
The 27-year-old Serb enjoys a strong bond with the new United manager, who insisted on Chelsea re-signing him from Benfica in January 2014.
Although Mourinho famously hauled Matic off 27 minutes after introducing him as a substitute during Chelsea’s defeat to Southampton last season, there is not thought to be any animosity between the two.
New Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has been linked to the Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan this summer and could already be putting plans in place to operate without Matic in his first choice line-up next season.
The Serb, who was linked to United in 2013, still has three years left on his contract at Stamford Bridge and would cost in the region of £30million.
