But if it’s the beginning of the Old Trafford road for Ibrahimovic and Bailly, it could be the end of it for Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger, with the Mirror reporting that he is “set to be ditched by United after just one season.”
Schweinsteiger, whose time at United has been beset by injury problems, missed the end of the Premier League season after tearing a medial knee ligament while on international duty in March.
But the 31-year-old was back in time to take part in Germany’s pre-Euro 2016 training camp in Ascona and earn a place in Joachim Low’s 23-man squad, and says he feels great.
Where he ends up playing at club level next season, though, remains to be seen.
Vardy to be a Gunner by Sunday?
The euphoria generated by Leicester’s Premier League title triumph is rapidly being replaced by the feeling that some of the stars who steered the Foxes to that incredible moment won’t be sticking around at all long.
Chief among them, the Mirror says, is top scorer Jamie Vardy — and the England international could even wrap up a move to Arsenal on Sunday.
Vardy, runner-up to Tottenham’s Harry Kane in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot, signed a new Leicester deal as recently as February.
But those terms included a clause saying that clubs (other clubs as it turned out, of course) who were playing in the Champions League next season could buy him for £22m.
Arsenal have triggered the clause — and now they hope to conclude a deal for the former Fleetwood Town man before the weekend is out.
On Saturday, a source told ESPN FC that England striker Vardy was due to undergo an imminent medical in London as the move rapidly picks up pace.
England coach Roy Hodgson wants all transfers involving members of his squad to either be done before Euro 2016 or put on ice until after the tournament — and it seems 29-year-old Vardy will be heading for London before rather than after.
The Mirror reports that the striker has been offered a lucrative four-year deal and will become the second summer arrival at the Emirates Stadium after Granit Xhaka joined from Borussia Monchengladbach.
To add to Leicester fans’ new-found angst, the Star says Chelsea are in “advanced talks” with midfield star N’Golo Kante about a move to Stamford Bridge.
Kante was linked with a switch to London soon after it was confirmed that Antonio Conte would take over as Chelsea boss — and another Foxes mainstay could soon be on his way to the capital.
The Star says Kante and Chelsea have held “several meetings,” but the Mirror adds that Kante has said: “For now, I have not taken a decision, even if I have been made offers.”
– Newcastle winger Andros Townsend will soon be back in the Premier League — at least, he will be if Crystal Palace have their way.
The Sunday People reports that the Eagles will make an £8m move for the former Tottenham man, with that offer meeting the release clause in his contract.
Townsend moved to St James’ Park for £12m in January but was unable to help his new side avoid relegation from the top flight and also missed out on a place in England’s Euro 2016 squad.
– AC Milan star Carlos Bacca, linked with a move to West Ham, has told Sky Sport Italia that talk is just that: talk.
The Colombia international said: “I’ve a four-year contract with Milan, and I want to focus on the Copa America.”
