Sunderland now seem to have missed out on Vicente Iborra after Sevilla pulled out of the deal.
The Black Cats had seen a bid of £7.7million accepted for the 28-year-old defensive midfielder, who was understood to be keen on a move to the Premier League.
However, it has now been claimed that Sevilla have decided against a sale and intend to keep hold of Iborra.
Sunderland are also facing the prospect of missing out on Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason to Hull City, despite claims this morning the Wearside outfit were ahead of the Tigers in the battle for his signature.
If Sunderland have indeed missed out on both players, boss David Moyes faces a race against time to bolster his midfield options and he is also seeking a new goalkeeper.
The club also saw a loan move for Danny Ings knocked back by Liverpool and Moyes will be eager to bring in a few new faces before the deadline passes after missing out on four targets in quick succession.
