Zenit St Petersburg have revealed they rejected a bid from Stoke City to sign their star midfielder Axel Witsel.
Potters boss Mark Hughes was on the look out for a new midfielder in the January transfer window and eventually broke the club’s transfer record to sign Giannelli Imbula.
However it would appear that Belgium international Witsel was also on his radar at some point with Zenit’s general director Maxim Mitrofanov claiming a bid was rejected.
Zenit fear another bid in the summer and they are bracing themselves for offers.
“There was an offer from the Stoke City,” Mitrofanov has been quoted as saying. “They offered about €15-16m. No other proposals took place. (Our) colleagues probably think we may ‘fail’ in summer.
“Witsel’s agents are dreaming of selling him somewhere but we will be happy if he continues playing in our team.”
