Chelsea are reported to have failed with a £40million bid for Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes.
Blues boss Antonio Conte is looking to bolster his midfield before the season gets underway and has been linked with a host of players including N’Golo Kante, Radja Naingollan and Paul Pogba.
Portugal international Gomes has now been added to that list but reports claim that Valencia have knocked back Chelsea’s bumper offer and are holding out for more.
The highly-rated 22-year-old has been compared to former Chelsea star Michael Ballack and is also wanted by Italian champions Juventus, who are said to be leading the race.
Valencia have accepted there is a good chance that Gomes will move on as they cannot offer him Champions League football next season, but they will hold out for as much as they can get.
Gomes’ future will only be sorted once and for all when he returns from Euro 2016, with Portugal in action against Wales this evening.
