Jose Mourinho’s former striker Benni McCarthy says Manchester United’s players don’t need to be fearful of his confrontational ways.
The pair were together at Porto and enjoyed a strong working relationship.
The South African won a treble under Mourinho and he was responsible for scoring a brace against United when Porto knocked them out of the Champions League back in 2004.
McCarthy, who also endured had an ill-fated spell at Blackburn Rovers, is convinced United will be able to work themselves back up the football ladder under the guidance of Mourinho.
McCarthy said: “No one should be fearful of him, unless they don’t do as they’re told and keep repeating mistakes.
“Defence is the priority for Jose. He’s cautious, but makes sure opponents can’t break you down easily.
“He’ll be very well prepared on opponents, better than anyone.”
Mourinho is clearly enjoying his early days at United before they fly out late next week on their pre-season tour of China.
The Portuguese released a series of training photos on his Instagram account on Wednesday, with the caption: “After 10 training sessions I can say: ‘I love to work with these guys'”
