Mawson tipped for the top

Swansea boss Francesco Guidolin is backing new signing Alfie Mawson to be a big hit in the Premier League despite his tender age.

The Swans splashed out £5million to sign the central defender from Barnsley before the closure of the transfer window, and he has already been compared to the likes of former Tykes star John Stones.

It has been suggested that Guidolin should have brought in someone with more experience to replace Ashley Williams, who left for Everton, but the Italian insists Mawson is ready for the top flight now.

“It is early to say if Alfie can be a leader like Ashley but I can say he is a talented young player with a good personality,” Guidolin said. “In training he is like other players, he is at their level and he is their equal.

“He looks like he has been here a long time and my staff have been very impressed with him and he is ready to play Premier League football.

“Physically he is ready. I like him. He has good feet, he is tall, powerful and I like him.

“We have seen players come from Barnsley like John Stones and have success, with what we have seen I hope the same future lies ahead for Alfie.”
