“Is the aim to go there as champions? Yes”

“But I think the future is fantastic for Tottenham who have unbelievable supporters, a new stadium, incredibly facilities and they can become a top club and fight every season to be the top club.

“Whether they can achieve that is different, but it is important early next season to fight for it.”

Pochettino claims he made the announcement about his contract to end speculation about his future with reports linking him to Paris St Germain and Manchester United.

But he also did it to make sure his players know exactly how committed he is to Spurs – and to help attract the right kind of signings this summer.

Pochettino, who insists he had no other offers on the table, said: “I think it is a good time. It is important that we are not wasting time with rumours and different things.

“I think of course we are responsible to show we believe in the club and then we show we want to keep all the big, important players. They are important to our future.
