Juan Mata will look to open new contract negotiations with Manchester United before this summer’s European Championships.
Sources for SiaS have been told that the Spain midfielder is keen to establish his long-term situation at Old Trafford, and is tipped to be a casualty if boss Louis van Gaal is replaced by Jose Mourinho at the end of the campaign.
Mata has two years remaining on his £130,000 a week deal and his camp want to open an early dialogue, so they know the true landscape.
The 27-year-old has been linked with a return to his former club Valencia, although the player is happily settled in Manchester and wishes to remain.
And Mata and his representatives know United, for their part, must reconcile wanting the majority of the £37.1m they paid to Chelsea back in January 2014 while allowing his contract to run down any further.
