Jose Mourinho has told Juan Mata he does have a future at Manchester United if he accepts a reduced number of starts.
The Old Trafford boss has spelled out his plans for the Spanish playmaker, who he appeared to drive out of Chelsea prior to his £37.1million transfer to United in 2014.
Mourinho felt Mata was unwilling to work back and preferred the industry of Brazilians Oscar and Willian in the ‘number ten’ role.
And it is understood that Mourinho will initially prefer captain Wayne Rooney over Mata in that position now that he is in charge of the Red Devils, although it may not necessiarily spell the end for the player.
Spanish star Mata, who is on tour with United in China, is understood to want to stay and fight for his place.
He believes he can impress Mourihno enough on tour to show he is worth a regular start.
