Sadio Mane believes Southampton will benefit from the extra rest ahead of their clash with Manchester City on Sunday.
The Saints have not been in action since they won 4-2 away at Aston Villa on April 23, while City have been involved in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie with Real Madrid.
The Citizens will play the second leg on Wednesday and Mane believes his side could take advantage of their opponents, who may well be focused on reaching their first final in Europe’s premier club competition.
He said: “I think the advantage is because we have more days’ rest. They played Tuesday, but we have to focus for the game and be ready, and give our best for the fans and for the club.”
Ronald Koeman’s side are currently eighth in the league standings and have an outside chance of securing European football for next season, although Senegal international Mane is only thinking about claiming the three points on Sunday.
He continued: “It’s a big game. I think now we are ready, because we are training good and everybody is focused on Sunday. It was important for us to win that game (Aston Villa), and we did. I think the confidence is back now. We’re focused for the next one at home and hopefully we’re going to win.”
