Former Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins believes the club have disrespected Louis van Gaal and should have taken the same approach Manchester City took.
Reports emerged moments after the Dutchman led the Red Devils to their first FA Cup triumph for 12 years that Van Gaal would be dismissed as manager and replaced by Jose Mourinho within 72 hours.
As a result, it completely overshadowed what should have been a night of celebrations for Van Gaal and the United team and Wilkins has slammed his former club for being disrespectful in the way they have handled the situation.
“I saw Jose was at the [David Haye] fight last night and they were trying to interview him after it and he was very non-committal in his response to the media,” he told the Weekend Sports Breakfast.
“It’s been a tad disrespectful as far as Van Gaal is concerned. The decision should have been made and United should have come out and said what the situation was.
“I thought the way City dealt with the Manual Pellegrini situation was spot on. He wasn’t going to be there and rumours were rife that Guardiola was going to take over and I thought they handled it in the best possible fashion.”
