Manchester United and Manchester City friendly cancelled due to ‘recent weather events’

released a statement that read: “Due to recent weather events, tournament organisers and participating clubs have made the decision to cancel tonight’s International Champions Cup fixture to be played in Beijing tonight, 25 July.

“A press conference will take place at the National Stadium at 4.30pm local time (9.30pm BST).”

City then bizarrely changed the statement, deleting mention of the press conference and replacing it with: “Further details and statements will follow.”

Worries over the condition of the pitch had marred the build-up to this game, billed the first Manchester derby held outside of the city.

Managers Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola united in their concerns over the pitch at a press conference yesterday.

“If you ask me my objective for the match tomorrow I only have one: Take the players home safe without any kind of injury,” said Mourinho.
