Mourinho said on taking over at United in the summer that he saw Rooney as a “No9, a No10 or a 91/2 but said: “If somebody confused him, it was not me.”
Asked if Rooney’s future is in midfield he replied: “He can play everywhere. That’s no problem.”
Rooney scored United’s winner at Anfield last season but asked if his past deeds and experience of big games will influence his team selection, Mourinho said: “No.”
He added: “I want to choose my team independent of these factors. The records are not important for me. A match is an isolated event.
“There is no relation to what you did in the past; no relation to what you do in the future. That is why I don’t like much the statistics of previous matches and previous results and this kind of thing.”
