After the initial discovery of the device and evacuation, United declared a ‘red code’ situation and Police confirmed there was a ‘severe’ threat.
A police spokesperson said earlier in the day: “The army bomb disposal team has been called and they will have to search the entire ground.
“The current threat level of terrorism remains ‘severe’ so we would not take any chances.
“It would take too long to deal with the incident which is why the game had to be abandoned.”
It was thought a second package had been discovered, with the military drafted in and talkSPORT presenter Stan Collymore claiming trouble started in the 100 Club suite in the stadium.
It was claimed a mobile phone with wires had been found and had been detonated by bomb-disposal specialists.
“A controlled explosion has just been carried out within the stadium by bomb disposal experts at Old Trafford,” Greater Manchester Police tweeted.
