The Bundesliga outfit were successful in persuading England Under-17 star Jadon Sanchez to quit Manchester City during the summer, having been alerted to the fact the youngster had entered the final year of his contract at the Etihad.
Gomes, 17, is in a similar situation at Old Trafford, stalling on a professional contract the Red Devils offered him back in September, with Juventus and Barcelona also keen on acquiring his services.
Dortmund chiefs are aware that Gomes, who is rated as the brightest prospect on United’s books, is a close friend of Sancho’s and could be tempted to join up with his Three Lions colleague at the Westfalenstadion.
The Germans have already handed Sancho his first-team debut and Gomes is impatient to get his own career moving forwards, with his camp fearful he will not get many opportunities while Jose Mourinho remains in charge at United.
Dortmund paid City £8.5m for Sancho and a similar compensation figure for Gomes would be more than acceptable to them for a player tipped to have a big future.
