Speculation is growing that the England international will depart Old Trafford during the summer, only when Jose Mourinho has added attacking reinforcements to his squad.
With Alvaro Morata closing in on a move to United, Everton are believed to be ready to seal a deal for Rooney – who made just 15 starts in the Premier League last season.
Ronald Koeman has made no secret of his admiration for the 31-year-old and has suggested he would be keen to sign Rooney, who left Goodison for Old Trafford back in 2004.
Having spent around £90million on transfers already this summer, it’s understood Everton are keen on a loan deal – which would see United continuing to pay some of his wages – with a view to a permanent deal after that.
Rooney, who is contracted until 2019, is keen for more regular first-team football with the prospect of being selected in the England squad if, as expected, they qualify for next year’s World Cup.
