“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit more motivated when a new manager comes in.”

So Rooney, whose 15-goal tally last season was his lowest since joining United, accepts the heat is on.

He said: “You always feel pressure when you play for Manchester United, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and it’s been a pleasure to play for them.

“But you always feel you have to prove yourself every season and I’m really excited to be working with Jose this season.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit more motivated when a new manager comes in.”

Rooney is playing catch-up in terms of his fitness after Euro 2016 and will not be considered for the games against Borussia Dortmund tomorrow and Manchester City in Beijing on Monday.
