Liverpool have announced they will play boss Jurgen Klopp’s former club Mainz in a pre-season friendly in August.
The Reds have confirmed they will take on the German side away but it is likely to be a largely reserve or young side that will travel to Germany as the clash has been scheduled for August 7, the day after the high-profile game against Barcelona at Wembley.
Klopp spent 18 years at Mainz, 11 as a player and then seven as boss before he took over as Borussia Dortmund manager in 2008.
Liverpool will play four friendlies in the north of England – against Tranmere (July 8), Fleetwood (July 13), Wigan Athletic (July 17) and Huddersfield (July 20) before taking part in the International Champions Cup.
Klopp’s side will face Chelsea in that summer competition in Pasadena on July 28, before games against AC Milan in Santa Clara on July 30 and then Roma in St Louis on August 1 before the big Barca game at Wembley.
