Newcastle are hoping to conclude a deal for Hull City midfielder Mohamed Diame after offering his release clause fee of £4.5million.
Reports say a fee of around £4.5m has been agreed between the two clubs and the 29-year-old, who scored the Tigers’ winning goal in the Championship play-off final against Sheffield Wednesday in May, is keen on a move to St James’ Park to escape the uncertainty at Hull.
Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is looking for replacements for Georginio Wijnaldum, who recently left for Liverpool, while Moussa Sissoko is also likely to move on this summer.
The impending loss of Diame is just the latest headache for Hull, who are still without a manager following Steve Bruce’s resignation last month.
Hull will not want to lose Diame, who has scored 13 goals in 50 league appearances for the Tigers since arriving from West Ham in 2014, but they may be powerless to block the deal now his release fee has been activated.
