The KNVB had hoped to convince the former Netherlands manager to become a technical director but both The Times and The Telegraph claim the Dutchman has rejected the chance to return to his country’s international set-up.

It had been thought Jose Mourinho was being lined up to replace Van Gaal but the current United boss has seemingly been offered assurances over his future and he expects to see out his contract at Old Trafford, with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season.

Van Gaal has already confirmed he intends to retire in the summer of 2017, meaning next season will be his last campaign as a manager if he remains with United.
