Louis van Gaal has lost the plot: It’s time for Man United to appoint Jose Mourinho

He continues to cling to his job, hoping that winning the FA Cup this weekend will spare him the axe and allow him to see out the final 12 months of his contract.

But if United bosses accept that winning the FA Cup is a measure of success and progress then perhaps their standards have fallen as much as the team’s have.

United should be challenging for the Premier League title every season and going deep into the Champions League latter stages.

This will not happen as long as Van Gaal remains in charge and with a manager of Jose Mourinho’s standing ready, willing and more than able to take charge, it is almost inconceivable United would pass up the chance to appoint him.

Yes, he comes with baggage. But he also comes with the proven ability to make teams great and win trophies. What are United waiting for?
