Liverpool appear to have won the race to sign Georginio Wijnaldum after agreeing a fee of £25million with Newcastle for the midfielder.
The Reds were thought to be battling it out with Tottenham for the Netherlands international’s signature after he made it clear he wanted to leave the Toon this summer following their relegation to the Championship.
Newcastle reluctantly agreed to put him on the market, slapping a £25million price tag on his head, a sum which was too steep for Spurs, who reportedly ended their pursuit, clearing the way for Liverpool to swoop.
Having met Newcastle’s asking price, Wijnaldum will head to Merseyside for further negotiations and to undergo a medical before he can finalise his switch to Anfield.
Should he put pen to paper then the 25-year-old will become Liverpool’s fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Sadio Mane, Lorius Karius, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip.
