Liverpool chief reveals all on transfer deadline day deal

“Sitting in the Ukraine on the day war broke out, trying to sign Ukrainian Yevhen Konoplyanka which sadly never got done because of the selling club.”

Ayre announced last term he would be stepping down when his contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

He will continue to work in football after being attracted to the opportunity to transform the fortunes of Bundesliga II side 1860 Munich.

The club’s owner, Hasan Ismaik, described Ayre as “the right person for our future” and added: “When he found out about the tradition of the club, he was very enthusiastic.”

Ayre joined Liverpool in 2007 as commercial director and the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, have already started the process of identifying a successor.
