But at least Kop boss Jurgen Klopp stayed in his dugout – which is more than opposite number Eduardo Berizzo managed.
The Sevilla boss was sent to the stands on the hour after throwing the ball away from Liverpool defender Joe Gomez as he ran over to take a throw-in.
Klopp reacted angrily to that incident and Berizzo, who had already been warned for a similar act, tried to row with the German before being shown down the tunnel.
Thanks to a Firmino equaliser and Mohamed Salah strike, at least Klopp was on course to come out on top in Liverpool’s Champions League return.
But, on 72 minutes, sub Luis Muriel found far too much space in midfield and his through ball found Joaquin Correa who lifted a silky finish over Loris Karius.
