Justine Greening was named Mrs Morgan’s replacement as Education Secretary and was also appointed Minister for Women and Equalities.
The education role was also beefed up to include managing further and higher education, skills and apprenticeships, which had previously been the responsibility of the Department for Business.
Business Secretary Sajid Javid was moved to Communities and Local Government Secretary in a job swap with Greg Clark, who takes on an expanded brief as Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Secretary.
The decision to scrap the separate Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) angered opposition MPs.
Former Labour leader Ed Miliband posted on Twitter: “DECC abolition just plain stupid. Climate not even mentioned in new dept. title.
“Matters because depts shape priorities shape outcomes.”
Liberal Democrat MP Lynne Featherstone said: “This is another nail in the coffin of the green agenda pushed forward so radically by Liberal Democrats in Coalition.
“Abolishing DECC is further evidence that the Conservatives have no intention of sticking by their legally binding renewables targets.
“Climate change sceptics in the Tory party must be having a field day.”
