Hull City made a deadline-day enquiry for Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley but were rebuffed by Toffees boss Ronald Koeman.
Tigers caretaker boss Mike Phelan knows the England midfielder well from their days together at Manchester United and was interested in taking Cleverley to the KCOM Stadium.
Cleverley was a big favourite of former Everton boss Roberto Martinez but has played just five minutes of Premier League football this season under new manager Koeman.
But the Dutchman said ‘no’ to Hull’s approach for the 27-year-old former Old Trafford youth team player.
The Tigers signed two other midfielders on transfer deadline day – James Weir from United and Markus Henriksen from AZ Alkmaar.
