Everton have confirmed that they face ‘several weeks’ without defender Seamus Coleman due to an ankle injury.
The Republic of Ireland international missed big spells of last season due to a hamstring problem, making just 27 starts for Everton, and his absence was a big setback for former boss Roberto Martinez.
New manager Ronald Koeman will now have to contend with another Coleman absence, with youngster Mason Holgate filling in at full-back in his absence in the season opener against Tottenham.
Coleman is joined on the sidelines by Romelu Lukaku, who also sat out the Spurs game, but it was not explained why the Belgian striker was absent.
Speaking prior to the opening home game, Koeman stated: “We’re disappointed Romelu can’t start today and Seamus will be out for several weeks.”
