Everton boss Ronald Koeman insists young defender Mason Holgate is a big talent following his performance against Manchester United.
The 19-year-old joined the Toffees last summer for £2million from Barnsley but wasn’t handed many opportunities by former boss Roberto Martinez.
However, Koeman appears to be a big fan of the defender and has allowed Holgate to feature in all five of their pre-season friendlies.
The former Tykes man lined up in a three-man central defensive partnership with John Stones and Ramiro Funes Mori at Old Trafford for Wayne Rooney’s testimonial, which ended goalless.
Koeman admitted he was pleased with Holgate’s performance and believes there is still a great deal to come from him in the future.
“He did very good.
“You have to understand that he is 18 years old but maybe he showed more confidence than some other players on the pitch.
“He looks very comfortable and he’s a big talent.
“I told him in the morning that not many young boys get the chance to play at Old Trafford. You have to play your game, do your best, I think you are ready.
“It doesn’t matter if you are 18 years old or are 36 years old, go and show your qualities. And he did.”
