Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admits that his priority this summer is to strengthen the team’s defence.
The Reds have conceded more Premier League goals than any other side in the top eight of the division and they have twice surrendered two-goal leads in recent weeks – against Southampton and Newcastle.
The Merseyside club have already signed Joel Matip on a free transfer, with the centre-back set to officially join the club in the summer, but with Mamadou Sakho facing a potential lengthy ban for failing a drugs test, Klopp admits he will need to strengthen his defensive ranks further.
The German said: “When you build up a team, you start with the defence – that’s how it is. It keeps you in the game and gives you the opportunity to score once and win the game. I’m never happy with conceding goals, to be honest.
“It’s clear it’s how we build up a team and that’s one of the biggest targets for the next season – not for the rest of this season, but for next season, and then to build up a stability in this part of the game.”
