The 25-year-old summer signing from Newcastle, who has started every Premier League game for the Reds so far this season, suffered the injury while playing for the Netherlands in their 2018 World Cup qualifier against France.

Wijnaldum limped off after an hour of the 1-0 defeat and it was initially feared that he had picked up a hamstring injury which would potentially rule him out for a long spell.

But it’s now been revealed that the influential midfielder has hurt his hip and boss Jurgen Klopp has not given up hope of including him in the squad for the Anfield showdown against Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils.

If Wijnaldum is ruled out then either Emre Can or Lucas Leiva will step into the void alongside Jordan Henderson with Adam Lallana still out.

Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren should also be available to Klopp despite withdrawing from international duty with England and Croatia respectively because of injury problems.
