Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes Joel Matip will be back in training this week after suffering a minor knock on Sunday.
The 24-year-old joined the Reds on a free transfer from Schalke over the summer and has been involved during the pre-season friendlies.
Matip was given the nod to start Sunday’s game against Wigan at the DW Stadium but failed to complete the match as Liverpool won 2-0 against the Championship outfit.
The Cameroon international left the field late on in some discomfort but Klopp has played down concerns over his availability heading towards the start of the domestic campaign.
Matip said: “I hope it’s only a minor problem. It’s not too serious, hopefully. It’s the foot he had problems with in the past and then he had a little bit of pain when pre-season started because of the intensity.
“He said he’s had it one or two times already. He’s used to it. I think Monday he’ll rest, then he can go again.
“We had to make the decision of Joel or Dejan (Lovren), who has to play the whole 90 minutes? We decided on Joel. For him it was a little bit too much today, but he is in a good way, as you can see.”
