Kevin De Bruyne has revealed that Manchester City kept in daily contact with him as they looked to tie up his signing during the transfer window last summer.
The club gave little away on the public stage concerning the deal, and after a long-running saga, the former Chelsea playmaker linked up with City for a club-record £54 million deal.
Despite public silence about the ongoing transfer, De Bruyne has revealed that City were doing all they could to convince him to leave Wolfsburg for the Etihad, calling him every day during the summer.
“I think the thing that most gave me confidence at that particular time was that they were busy trying to contact me,” De Bruyne said, speaking of the transfer.
“They called every day until the day that I signed here. They pushed for me to come and for me that gave me a great sign that they were interested and that I could be important over here.”
The 24-year-old has fitted in seamlessly to City’s team, and his impact upon their season has been enormous.
The Belgian has 15 goals and 16 assists for Manuel Pellegrini’s men, and there is a belief that his injury was the reason City fell out of competing for the Premier League title.
Another man who has had to deal with injury at the Etihad this term has been Samir Nasri, who featured against Bournemouth last weekend for the first time in almost six months.
Despite only just getting back to full fitness, Pellegrini is ready to give the Frenchman a run-out in the final weeks of the campaign to let Nasri prove his talent ahead of the summer transfer window – and the arrival of Pep Guardiola.
The manager added: “It was a very unlucky injury because it was in a training session without any problem. He shot a ball and he felt that something happened in his muscle, and it was very hard.
“I am happy for him because he has worked very well in the last month. He has returned maybe a little bit earlier than the doctor expected, that’s why he is not in the Champions League list, but I am very happy to be telling you about him.
“I hope in the last games of the Premier League he will demonstrate how good a player he is.”
