Sunderland keeper Vito Mannone has warned arch-rivals Newcastle that the Black Cats are still in the best position to stay up.

The Magpies went above Sunderland at the weekend when they beat Crystal Palace, whilst at the same time Sam Allardyce’s men could only draw at Stoke, a result which dropped them back into the bottom three.

Mannone still believes Sunderland are in the best position due to the fact they have a game in hand over their rivals and a superior goal difference.

He told the Echo: “We have been playing well for a while now, and have been solid. It’s just a shame that we didn’t gain enough points when we played Southampton, Newcastle and West Brom.

“That is a small shame, but we are still in it and itÂ’s still in our own hands. It is down to us now.”
