Jose Mourinho could divide Man Utd squad into two teams in search of Old Trafford glory

Mourinho’s A Team will include his new signings, brought to Old Trafford to make the difference and improve on last season’s fifth-place finish.

They are £30m centre-back Eric Bailly, out-of-contract striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and £26m midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

One more senior signing is planned – another midfielder.

Paul Pogba would be the dream recruit but United face competition from Real Madrid for the Juventus and France star who spent two years at Old Trafford.

Alternative – and cheaper – options are Nemanja Matic from Mourinho’s former club Chelsea and Paris St-Germain’s Blaise Matuidi.

That means the A Team at United this season, who start their campaign against Bournemouth on August 14, could look like this in a 4-2-3-1 formation: De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Bailly, Shaw; Carrick, Pogba or Matic; Mkhitaryan, Rooney, Martial; Ibrahimovic.

The B Team is harder to predict as there are likely to be departures before this summer’s transfer window closes.
