Jermain Defoe: I want to go down as a Premier League legend

The 33-year-old needs just four goals to hit the top ten of all-time Premier League goalscorers with former Arsenal and Manchester United star Robin Van Persie holding down that spot on 144 goals.

Defoe is on 11 league goals for the season, 14 in all competitions, and another three will ensure this has been his most productive campaign since netting 18 for Tottenham in 2009-10.

He’s also keen to register the third highest tally by a Sunderland forward in the modern era, behind Black Cats’ legend Kevin Phillips (30 in 1999-00) and Darren Bent (24 in 09-10).

Despite Defoe’s form in front of goal, Sam Allardyce’s side are deep in trouble and he knows if they go down, he may not have another opportunity.
